Awards Community Development Block Grant funds to local municipalities to assistwith the design, upgrade and revitalization of public parks, playgrounds or fitness trails for the benefit of the neighborhood.
Parks & Playground Initiative Grant
The Parks & Playground Initiative is designed to assist urban county communities to design, upgrade and revitalize a public park, playground or fitness trail to benefit the neighborhood. The primary focus is to ensure that playgrounds comply with State regulations for playgrounds and are accessible in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities (ADA) Act of 1990.

Park refers to a bounded area of land, usually in its natural or semi-natural (landscaped) state and set aside for some purpose, usually to do with recreation.

Playground refers to an improved outdoor area designed, equipped, and set-aside as a play area for children.

Fitness Trail refers to a path or course equipped with obstacles or stations distributed along its length for exercising the human body to promote good health.
Program Eligibility
The Parks & Playground Initiative is ONLY available to urban county communities with a percentage of low-moderate income persons higher than 41% of the total population.
Urban County LMI by Census Block Group
- Project location must be city owned and in a low-moderate income census tract.
- Project is located in a neighborhood park or playground that is free and accessible to the public.
- Project location must be an existing park or playground.
Eligible Projects
- Replacement or installation of playground equipment (i.e. swings, climbers, play sets, slides)
- Replacement or installation of backstops for athletic playing fields
- Installation of ADA ramps and equipment
- Installation of surfacing materialli>
- Installation of a fitness trail/multipurpose trail
- New construction of a playground
- Athletic playing field (i.e. baseball, football
- Athletic courts (I.e. basketball, tennis
Ineligible Projects
- Acquisition
- Swimming Pools
- Golf courses
- Park programs
- Purchase of non-fixture accessories (i.e. balls, racquets, bats)
